
With their win last week in the Boys 2nd Region Tournament, the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons moved a step closer to the #1 spot in terms of 2nd Region championships. The Maroons trail only Christian County in terms of titles, and with going back-to-back in 2019 and 2020, that gap has closed significantly.
With this year’s tourney in the books, Christian County still holds the #1 slot with 18 2nd Region titles. The Colonels last 2nd Region championship was in 2016. Madisonville is second, but now just two back with sixteen.
Hopkinsville is a distant 3rd in the title race with 9. The Tigers last title came in 2017.
Following the Hopkinsville Tigers, there are only seven other schools with more than one regional championship.
University Heights has seven titles, with the Blazers latest coming in 2018.
Dawson Springs has won the championship a total of six times, with the last Panther title in 1955.
Earlington High School won the 2nd Region title a total of four times. Their last title came in 1967, the year the Yellow Jackets won the state championship. Earlington’s last year of competition was the 1974-1975 season.
Despite being the largest school in the region, Henderson County has won only three boys 2nd Region titles. The last of those coming in 1999.
Union County also has three regional titles. The last title for the Braves was in 1998.
South Hopkins picked up a pair of 2nd Region championships. The last of the two came in 1958. South Hopkins last season of play was the 1995-1996 season.
Trigg County has two championships. The last title for the Wildcats came in 1997, Trigg also won the All A regional championship that same season.
A total of 15 other schools have won a regional title since 1936.
