Panthers Will Look to Build on 13-Win Season

Senior guard Landon Pace is the top returning scorer for Dawson Springs.

The Dawson Springs boys won 13 basketball games this season — the second most for the Panthers in the last 21 seasons.

The 2016-17 Panthers were the last Dawson team with a winning record, going 17-16.

Prior to that, the 1998-99 Panthers turned in a 21-6 record.

The 2019-20 Panthers started the year 3-3 and ended the year with an 8-7 record over their final 15 games.

However, a 2-8 stretch in December and January led to the Panthers finishing the campaign with a 13-18 mark.

Jim Hicks’ team will lose just two seniors but those were two of the squad’s top three scorers this season.

Skyler Clark averaged 17.1 points a game and topped 1,000 career points this season while being named an all-region selection.

Braxton Cotton has also used up his eligibility, but scored 12.9 points and grabbed a team-high 9.0 rebounds a contest as a senior.

Juniors Landon Pace and Dylan Dawson will become even bigger factors for the Panthers next season.

Pace, a guard, shot 38.5 percent from 3-point range while netting 13.7 points a game.

Meanwhile, Dawson, a forward, totaled 10.8 points and 7.6 rebound a contest.

Junior guard Logan McKnight also figures to take on a bigger role next season while a large sophomore class will be counted on to fill new roles as well.

The Panthers swept a pair of games from Trigg County this season and split with 7th District rival Hopkins County Central.

Another highlight to the season was that Dawson gave 2nd Region champion Madisonville-North Hopkins its closest game of the season in the 7th District — and one of its closest of the regular season in the region. The Panthers fell just 90-82 on Jan. 9 in Dawson Springs.

Madisonville went on to win the regional championship with a 31-3 record and will play in the Sweet 16 in Rupp Arena if the KHSAA is able to eventually reschedule that event.

Dawson Springs, meanwhile, will try to move up the 7th District food chain next year against what could be relatively young squads at both Caldwell County and Hopkins County Central, and a Madisonville squad that loses all five starters to graduation.
