The KHSAA announced Tuesday the suspension of all spring sports as well as the Sweet 16 basketball tournament in the wake of the COVID-19 virus.  The KHSAA had originally announced a spring dead period through April 13.

In a release issued Tuesday, the KHSAA said the status of spring sports will be “continually reviewed as more data is available regarding school resumption or cessation, and activities being conducted in alignment with CDC and state and local directives.”

Both the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16 basketball tournaments remain suspended and not canceled.  The girls’ Sweet 16 was in the middle of the first round when the decision was made to stop playing sports due to COVID-19 concerns.  The boys’ Sweet 16 had not started.

Region and state tournaments for baseball, softball, archery, tennis, and track and field are all suspended but not canceled at this time. Region and state tournaments for bass fishing are being reviewed and were not a part of the suspended list. The KHSAA said they will continue to monitor their status and have said they do no plan to move or push back any of the state tournament dates for these sports. The KHSAA calendar lists June 7 as the final scheduled state championship date in any sport.

As of Tuesday, the only spring sport to be canceled was the second season championships of Esports.

The KHSAA has also rescheduled the May 30 Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame Banquet for April 2021.  Former University Heights Academy basketball standout Greg Buckner is a part of the HOF class.
