To say this spring has been different for high school athletes is an understatement. For Trigg County senior Trevor Lewis, the hits have come from both sides.
Lewis was able to put the adversity behind him Friday and sign to continue his college football career at Campbellsville University.
Lewis was a starter on the defensive line for the Wildcats in 2019, registering 34 tackles. He had three tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks in being named to the All-Western Kentucky Conference Team. He had 17 tackles, including three for loss, as a junior.
Right before high schools closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, Lewis committed to MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. Less then two weeks later, the school announced they were closing due to what they said were financial issues not related to the national pandemic.
Lewis pretty much had to recruit himself to colleges at this point. He already held another offer from Kentucky Christian University and decided to give Campbellsville a look. Lewis said the NAIA school is a good fit for him and looks to play defense and be a long snapper for the Tigers.
Friday’s signing ceremony was held at the Lewis household with less than 10 people present. Like many athletes this spring, Lewis missed out on the experience of signing his letter in a crowded room in front of an unlimited amount of family and friends. But he said experiences like these will prepare him to deal with the difficulties college will bring.
