A Caldwell County native is returning to his former position where he won a state basketball championship. Officials with Bowling Green High School announced Tuesday afternoon that D.G. Sherrill had been selected to be the next boys baskdetball coach at the school.
Sherrill returns to the sidelines with the Purples for the 2020-21 season, after resigning in 2017 to accept a position at the district office. School officials say Sherrill will continue his district responsibilities as he returns to coaching.
Sherrill has 25 years of coaching experience,18 of those as head coach, and 12 of those at Bowling Green High School, where he has a coaching record of 307-92. While at BGHS, his teams won 25 or more games in eight seasons and 30 or more games in three seasons.
In his previous tenure at Bowling Green, the Purples basketball team won seven 14th District titles and six regional titles. Additionally, Bowling Green advanced to four Elite Eights, three state Final Fours, one state runner-up, and won the only basketball state championship in school history in 2017.
Sherrill is a 1987 Caldwell County High School graduate. He started on the last Caldwell County team to make the 2nd Region basketball championship game. As a senior, Sherrill and the Tigers reached the 1987 regional title game before falling to Madisonville-North Hopkins.
