Robert Burnham has resigned as Christian County wrestling coach after 16 seasons. Burnham made the announcement Thursday in a video posted to social media.
Burnham said he wanted to make the announcement at the team’s postseason banquet. However, the KHSAA has placed restrictions on what schools can do during the COVID-19 pandemic which includes any team gatherings that violate the governor’s social media guidelines.
“It’s time for me to move on and let someone younger and more energetic take over the program,” Burnham said.
Burnham was voted the 2020 Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year after leading the Colonels to a runner-up finish at the state tournament — Christian County’s best finish since their 1988 state championship season.
The Colonels finished as runner-up in the region seven straight seasons from 2014-20. Burnham coached two individual state champions — Jakerion Merritt in 2019 and Niko Bussell in 2020. Over a dozen Colonels have went on to continue their wrestling careers in college.
