As the state continues to issue guidance for reopening the recreation and sports sectors in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Andy Beshear said they are still working to come up with a reopening plan for indoor recreation facilities.

Aquatic centers and fitness centers can reopen June 1, and low contact youth sports can begin June 15.  However, nothing has been announced concerning indoor recreation facilities such as the Planters Bank/Jennie Stuart Sportsplex Hopkinsville or high school gyms.  The governor said Tuesday that a plan concerning no contact practices inside could be developed for high schools, but said scrimmages were unlikely.

June has usually been set aside by the KHSAA for basketball teams to attend camps and play a limited number of practice games.  That likely won’t happen unless circumstances drastically change in the next few weeks.  That’s bad news for the Sportsplex which usually stays booked in the summer with high school basketball and volleyball events in addition to summer youth tournaments.

The governor said he expected to have guidance for the June 15 resumption of youth sports ready to release on Friday.

Here are the comments from Gov. Beshear on indoor facilities.
