The KHSAA took the first step in outlining the procedures for getting the fall sports season underway Tuesday by voting to eliminate the summer dead period for coaches and athletes.
The board of control voted 13-5 to do away with the annual June 25-July 9 period when athletes can have no contact with coaches or school facilities as a resting time from sports. With no high school sports in Kentucky since March 12 due to COVID-19, a spring dead period that was set to expire Sunday had the same effect.
KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said the KHSAA will follow many of the same youth sports guidelines for returning to play on June 15.
Most of the questions about returning to play concern football and soccer, which the state considers a “high-touch, outdoor activity.” Conditioning for these sports in groups of 10 or less can begin June 15 and actual practices in groups of 10 or less can begin June 29.
Tackett said he wants to gather input from football and soccer coaches as well as athletic directors “not to decide policy but come up with suggestions for each other” on the best way to execute a plan when practices can begin on June 29.
Tackett did say there was “zero chance” of football teams having 7-on-7 games prior to the start of the season in June and July like in years past.
