With people tucked away in their homes over the past three months practicing Safer at Home guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many teens turned to their gaming systems to pass the time.

And the KHSAA, who began offering an ESports championship in 2019, has seen an increase in schools wanting to offer ESports. The two are not coincedental.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said recently they have already seen an increase in schools wanting to participate in the fall season.  The ESports season offers the chance to play Smite, League of Legends, and Rocket League.  Tackett said they are likely to add a “true sports game” to the offering either this fall or spring.

ESports offers teamwork, communication, strategic thinking and leadership in an electronic game format.  The only Second Region school that lists an ESports coach is Christian County where Marvin Harness is listed as the spring season coach.
