Christian County recognized the 2019-20 wrestling team Monday in what was the final banquet for Robert Burnham as head coach. Burnham announced last month that he was stepping down as head coach after 16 seasons.
Burnham was voted the 2020 Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year after leading the Colonels to a runner-up finish at the state tournament — Christian County’s best finish since their 1988 state championship season.
The Colonels finished as runner-up in the region seven straight seasons from 2014-20. Burnham coached two individual state champions — Jakerion Merritt in 2019 and Niko Bussell in 2020 and over a dozen Colonels have went on to continue their wrestling careers in college.
Burnham took time to reflect on the legacy of the senior class and the mark they made on the Colonel wrestling program.
