With Kerry Stovall becoming the new athletic director of the Christian County Public School District, one of the best high school coaching jobs in the state is open.
Stovall was 251-143 record in 13 total seasons as Colonel basketball coach, including a state championship in 2011.
It’s not immediately known if the school will look in-house for Stovall’s replacement (which would allow them to name a new coach quickly) or advertise the position statewide. The lack of COVID-19 guidance from the state regarding a return to basketball workouts could delay the school’s decision further.
Despite injuries that plagued just about every starter on the team, the Colonels went 13-19 against one of the toughest schedules in the state and won the 8th District title. Christian County lost in the region semifinals 64-61 to eventual champ Madisonville.
While the Colonels lost three of their top four scorers to graduation, they return a solid nucleus of underclassmen that were thrust into increased roles in 2019-20 due to injuries.
Junior big man Olajuwon White is the leading returning scorer at 10 points a game and pulled down a team-high 6.6 rebounds a contest.
Junior Qua Chambers (8.4 ppg.) and sophomore Bubba Leavell (6.2 ppg.) will help with the scoring load in 2020-21.
