Christian County High School did not have to go far to find a new wrestling coach. Christian County High School Principal Matt Boehman Friday morning announced the hiring of Dee Leavell as the next coach.
Leavell succeeds Robert Burnham, who recently retired as the Colonel wrestling coach. Leavell has been an assistant wrestling coach at CCHS over the previous five years. He wrestled for the Colonels in high school and collegiately at Campbellsville University.
During his time under Coach Burnham, Leavell has coached and organized the youth wrestling program at Christian County.
Leavell says he “is excited to continue the wrestling tradition at Christian County High School and take it to the next level.”
Leavell takes over a program that finished second at state in 2020 — Christian County’s best finish since their 1988 state championship season.
The Colonels finished as runner-up in the region seven straight seasons from 2014-20 and had two individual state champions during that time — Jakerion Merritt in 2019 and Niko Bussell in 2020. Over a dozen Colonels have went on to continue their wrestling careers in college in the past decade.
