Organizers with the Bluegrass State Games, which was set to celebrate its 36th year, have announced they are canceling the 2020 games due to COVID-19.
According to a statement on the BGSG website, “All Bluegrass State Games events originally scheduled for 2020 will be canceled in consideration for the health and well-being of all athletes, officials, coaches, medical staff, and volunteers. The challenges and uncertainty that COVID-19 has presented prevent the organization from appropriately planning, organizing, and producing events this year.”
Organizers cited the inability for team travel for competition, medical committee concerns, as well as other factors in making the decision to cancel.
The Bluegrass State Games is a non-profit program sponsored privately to promote amateur athletics across the Commonwealth and is the largest participation activity of any amateur sporting event in the state with more than 15,000 participants in over 30 sports.
High school soccer and volleyball programs have used the games as a chance to play other schools at the BGSG to prepare for the fall season.
