The 1982 Trigg County girls' cross country team was the first state champion for the school in the sport.
With the calendar turning over to the month of July, the possible start of the 2020 high school cross country season moves closer. While most of the success in the state has center around the so-called “Golden Triangle” area, there have been years where teams in the area have had their success on the course.
On the boys side, Fort Campbell has been among the most successful programs. The Falcons cross country team picked up Boys Class A titles in 1980, 1981, and 1982. After moving up to Class AA, the Falcons picked up two more titles in 1988 and 1989.
Calloway County picked up its lone Class AA title in 1984.
Trigg County won the Class A championship in 1986.
West Hopkins, before it was consolidated with South Hopkins to form Hopkins Central, won the Class A title in 1987.
Other regional schools to win boys titles include: Daviess County (10), Owensboro (5), Owensboro Catholic (4), Bowling Green (3), Warren East (3), and Paducah Tilghman (2).
St. Xavier has the most boys team titles with 23. Trinity is second with 20.
In girls cross country, again Fort Campbell has been the most successful area team. The Lady Falcons won Class A titles in 1978, 1979, and 1980, and a Class AA championship in 1990.
Providence won Class A titles in 1981 and 1985.
Trigg County’s girls won Class A championships in 1982 and again in 1991.
Muhlenberg South, before they merged with Muhlenberg North, won the Class AA title in 2006.
Other regional schools to win titles include: Daviess County (8), Warren East (6), St. Mary (3), Hancock County (2), and Greenwood (1).
St. Henry has the most girls titles with 19. Highlands is second with 11 titles.
