When it comes to high school boys golf across the area, individual success on the course at the state level has come more often than team success. With the possible start of the 2020 golf season just a few weeks away, we thought it interesting to take a look at some of the best to play in this end of the state.
In team competition, you have to go back to 2007 for the last boys state champs from Western Kentucky. That year, Marshall County took the boys title.
Other schools from the western end of the state to win the boys golf team title include: Bowling Green in 1973, 1974, 1989, 1996, & 1997, Paducah Tilghman in 1972 & 2000, Daviess County in 1995, Mayfield in 1959, Russellville in 1970, and St. Mary in 2005.
St. Xavier has the most boys team golf titles with a total of 21. Male is next with 7, however the Bulldogs have not won a boys team title since 1948.
Individually, Owensboro and St. Mary have fared the best among schools in the west. Owensboro won individual titles in 1965 (Bernie Smith), 1969 (Jeff McGill), & 1977 (Jim Vincent), while St. Mary won the individual crowns in 1975 (Russ Cochran), 2005, & 2006 (Case Cochran).
