For fans hoping for fall high school sports in Kentucky, that hope still remains. According to Kentucky High School Athletic Association Commissioner Julian Tackett, there will be fall sports in Kentucky during 2020, but what it looks like is still very much up in the air. Tackett made the comments during the work session portion of the meeting of the KHSAA’s Board of Control Friday morning.
Tackett did go on to note that data will drive the decisions on when fall sports start, and that it is very possible that some sports could see their season schedules adjusted depending on what that data says.
As part of his comments Friday morning, Tackett did say that the current guidelines that are in place would be extended through August 2nd, meaning mandatory team events and practices cannot start until that date. The one sport exempted from the guidelines is high school golf, which appears to be the one sport ready to start on time.
Pointing to the guidelines that have been in place this summer for youth golf events, Tackett expressed his views that the golf season is likely to get up and running on its normal schedule for 2020.
There are likely to be many changes in how things operate once things to get up and going, and some events may see significant changes.
For example, Tackett stated it was very unlikely that the state cross country meet would be a one day event this year. Also, it is likely that freshman, jv, and varsity competition taking place on the same day will not happen during the fall sports season, and possibly beyond.
However, even with the optimism of a fall sports season, Tackett noted that if fans of high school sports want to actually see sports take place this fall, they need to follow the guidelines of mask wearing, social distancing, and sanitizing often.
