Gavin Grubbs’ AAU team went undefeated over the weekend and won the Primetime Sports National Basketball Tournament in Dallas.

The incoming freshman at University Heights Academy plays for Team Reform Sports, based out of Memphis.  UHA alum and former NBA player Greg Buckner coaches the team.

Team Reform beat the Texas Tar Heels 66-59 in the semifinals and clobbered the NTX Cardinals 77-37 in the championship game.  There were 29 teams in the event.  Buckner says there are potentially a half-dozen future Division I prospects on the team.

“Gavin sees the floor well and makes the guys around him better,” Buckner said.  “He has a great motor, can score, and really plays defense well.  He is one of our defensive stoppers.”

Greg’s son Ace and nephew Andre II, the son of another UHA Alum Andre, also play on the team that is 16-0 so far against a minimal schedule due to COVID-19.

Buckner says Grubbs can raise his recruiting profile by knocking down a few more shots.

“He needs to become a better shooter and become a more confident shooter.  He loves to pass and sometimes passes on shots too much.  He needs to be more aggressive with his shot.”

As for Buckner, his exit as an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies with the last coaching change has allowed him time to coach his son and nephew on the AAU circuit.

“I’ve enjoyed coaching and teaching these boys.  I’m hoping to get back into the NBA as a coach before too long.  But I’m enjoying the kids right now.”
