James Folz has put his name into consideration as a region golf favorite after taking first place Monday at the Hopkinsville Invitational. The Hopkinsville senior shot an even-par 71 on the same Hopkinsville Country Club course that will host the region tournament next month.
Folz shot even on the back nine with four birdies, four bogeys, and a par. His birdie on No. 16 proved to be enough to edge Owensboro Catholic’s Jakob Wellman by one shot. Wellman finished third in the region last year while Folz was sixth.
The top two finishers at the region tourney last year have graduated, but the next seven all return in 2020.
Folz helped Hopkinsville to a third-place finish in the team segment. Owensboro Catholic won with a score of 317, with Daviess County second at 323, and Hopkinsville one point back with a 324.
Andrew Riggs and Evan Pyle each shot an 85 to finish tied for 18th place. Calvin Demps carded an 85 to finish in 23rd place. Will Binkley finished 37th with a round of 89, and Joey Falco was 59th with a 98.
