Fall Sports in Kentucky Faces One More Hurdle Friday

The return of high school sports in Kentucky this fall faces one more hurdle this week.  The Kentucky Board of Education will meet Friday to discuss whether to approve the KHSAA plan for high contact sports.

According to the meeting agenda, KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett is expected to give a presentation and answer questions about the Board of Control’s vote last week to continue the current plan of starting full practices this week and games the week of Sept. 7 for soccer, volleyball, cross country, and football.

Superintendents are expected to discuss concerns about the safety of high contact fall sports, which are soccer, volleyball, and football.

Kentucky Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Steven Stack, is expected to discuss the guidance and recommendations for the resumption of play.  On Monday, both he and Governor Andy Beshear said they did not agree with the KHSAA vote to return to play before the Sept. 28 date to return to school recommended by Beshear.  The governor said he would not overturn the KHSAA decision.

The KDE, according to the agenda, is expected to discuss alternative options for high contact sports this fall.  Last week, the KHSAA voted down two options presented that would have delayed the start of football, soccer, and volleyball until Sept. 28.

The Kentucky Board of Education has 11 voting members all of which were appointed by Beshear as part of an executive order that reorganized the board.

The meeting will be Friday at 11 am, Central Time, and will be held online.
