After having almost 3,000 career receiving yards, DeMarcus Harris was ranked as one of the nation’s top 150 receivers coming out of Florida when he signed with Kentucky. He only got to play in three games as a true freshman in 2019 but look for a lot more out of him this year. Remember he had consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons and had 1,582 yards and 16 touchdowns on 73 catches his senior year when he had eight games with at least 100 receiving yards.
His name has been mentioned several times by both coaches and players during UK’s preseason play.
“He made a really good fade catch and it was a very contested throw,” offensive coordinator Eddie Gran said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “It’s that 50-50 ball that coach always talks about (when you’re playing). He went up and got it and Terry (Wilson) threw a great ball and that was nice to see.
“He is doing some other things (well) in practice and I’m feeling him (out). He’s trying to be physical and he’s working hard. He’s one that is making a move right now and it’s good to see.”
Gran has been pleased with the team’s overall progression this fall and likes competition he has with his receivers. He would like more consistency but almost every coach says that in the preseason as more things are being added.
The offensive coordinator knows receivers will have chances to make more plays with Terry Wilson back at quarterback and needs more than just Harris to emerge as consistent playmakers.
“We need just a couple of more out of that group to be more consistent and say they want to be a part of this thing,” Gran said. “That’s what I would like to see in the next three weeks.”
Kentucky opens the season September 26 at Auburn.
