Claire Knoth overcame that one bad hole that has plagued her at times on the course this year to finish in a tie for 26th place at the All-A Classic State Golf Tournament Saturday in Richmond.
Knoth finished her round at 87, which included a three-shot improvement on the back nine.
The Caldwell County sophomore started her day strong with shots that penetrated a thick fog on the first hole and resulted in a birdie. Then the bad hole happened. Knoth hit out of bounds off the tee on No. 2 and couldn’t overcome a pair of wayward chips to mark down a 10 on the scorecard.
After a double-bogey on No. 3, Knoth collected herself to shoot 2-over par over the final five holes of the hilly front nine at the University Club at Arlington.
She went out at 45 and had nothing worse than a bogey on the back nine to come in at 42.
Lexington Christian Academy’s Carter Lankford shot a 3-under 69 to claim the individual state title. Glasgow’s Nina McMurtrey and Lankford’s teammate C.A. Carter tied for second at 1-under 71.
Knoth was making her first appearance at the All-A Classic State Tournament after finishing tied for second at the region tourney.
