The Christian County Lady Colonels were on the brink of going down two sets to one in their 8th District showdown with Hopkinsville Monday night. However, the Lady Colonels used a huge rally in the third set to springboard to a four set win over the Lady Tigers at Colonel Gym.
Hopkinsville used a big run of its own in the opening set to take the early lead in the match. Behind the play of Alyssa Bearns and Hailey Hallmark, the Lady Tigers , trailing 11-7, scored the next ten points of the match to go up 17-11. That would be a lead they would not give up, as Hopkinsville took the opening set 25-21. Hallmark had five kills and Bearns added two for the Lady Tigers.
Behind the play of Macy Baker, Paris Buckner, and Hailey Sparks, the Lady Colonels rebounded in the second set. Christian County scored the first three points of the set and never trailed as they picked up the 25-18 win. Baker finished the set with five kills.
The third set began the same way, with the Lady Colonels scoring the first three points. This time, the Lady Tigers responded with a seven point run to go up 7-3. Hailey Hallmark had three kills in the seven point blitz. With Hallmark and Alyssa Bearns playing strong at the net, and Hopkinsville getting big plays from Lauren Watkins and Aloria Moyd in the back, the Lady Tigers extended the lead to 18-8 and appeared on the verge of taking a two set to one lead.
The lead was still at seven at 22-15 when the Lady Colonels made their move. Behind the efforts of Macy Baker, Paris Buckner, and Hailey Sparks, Christian County outscored Hopkinsville 8-1 to even things up at 23-23. The teams went back and forth until the score was 27-27. Then, came the point that may have been the point of the night. The Lady Colonels won a hard fought, long point, that put them up 28-27. They would finally close out the set on the next point to go up two sets to one.
The momentum of the rally and winning the intense set carried forward for Christian County, as the Lady Colonels settled the 4th set in impressive fashion. With Macy Baker and Paris Bucker controlling play at the net, Christian County used a 15-2 run to take a 19-8 lead, and then cruised on out to take the set 25-9 and the match three sets to one.
The win moves Christian County to 3-2 on the season, and 2-0 in 8th District play. Hopkinsville falls to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the district.
