Christian County’s gameplan coming into Monday’s district soccer game with University Heights Academy was to limit the chances of William Bryan. The Blazer senior had scored 18 goals in UHA’s first three games of the season – all wins.
Dropping seven players on defense and having a defender chase Bryan for most of the night, the Colonels limited the chances Bryan had. However, three other players scored, and the Blazer defense didn’t allow a single shot in a 4-0 win at Givens Field.
Bryan didn’t score, but he did assist on UHA’s first goal of the game four minutes in, serving up a helper to Preston Thomas who found the net out front.
UHA was able to penetrate the Colonel defenders several times to get some good looks at the goal only to be turned away by goalie Josh Settle. The Blazers put up 13 shots in the first half with Settle making eight saves.
Noah Shouse cleaned up a corner kick out front in the 25th minute to put the Blazers ahead 2-0.
Thomas again scored four minutes into a half, this time the second half as he tickled the twine off a helper from Mason Price.
Connor Dill closed out the scoring in the 53rd minute when he banged home his own missed shot that caromed off the crossbar.
The Blazers finished with 27 shots. Settle saved 16 of those.
On the flip side, the UHA defense didn’t see much action in the Colonel end of the field with the emphasis on dropping players. Freshman Quinton Quarles got his second win in goal for UHA, but the defensive unit in front of him didn’t allow any shots. The Blazer defense has allowed one goal in four games.
Christian County dropped its fifth straight game to start the season with three decided by three goals or less. They will play at Henderson County Tuesday. UHA has won six straight games against the Colonels.
The Blazers [4-0] will host Hopkins County Central Tuesday.
