Thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, high school basketball games in Kentucky during the 2020-2021 season will see a change in how they get started. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has announced that games during the season will not start with a jump ball.
Rather, the games will start with a coin toss to determine the opening possession. The home team will get to call the toss at the beginning of the game. After the opening possession, the alternating possession arrow will be in play for the rest of regulation.
Should the game go to overtime, the visiting team would then get to call the coin toss. Additional overtime periods would start based on the alternating possession arrow.
The change in policy for the 2020-2021 season was included in the return to competition guidelines released by the KHSAA.
