Jiles Wyatt, Micah Smith, and James Folz have been playing golf together locally for nearly six years. Calvin Demps joined them a couple of years ago after leaving the soccer field for the golf course.
Now seniors, the foursome got to play one final round of golf together earlier this week as they prepare for the region tournament Monday.
Wyatt, who attends University Heights, Folz, who attends Hopkinsville High, and Smith, a Christian County Colonel, have been fixtures on the summer youth golf tournaments since middle school. They made their way up their team ladders and have been the No. 1 golfers for their schools the past two seasons.
Demps, who attends Hopkinsville, hasn’t been playing golf as long but has become a quick study and has consistently scored for the Tigers this season.
While the golfers have become friends on the course, so have their families. They rarely miss a match and rarely miss a chance to support the other seniors, regardless of school affiliation.
It was just a friendly quad match Tuesday at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club, but the four seniors got one final time to play together as high schoolers. It was nine holes full of good shots, laughs, missed putts, and support. Afterward, it was an emotional time for the families who knew what they had just watched – one more highlight of a senior season unlike any other.
Monday, the four will take to the same course for the region tournament looking to score low enough to advance another week and play at the state tournament. And it’s a good bet they will take time to support each other whenever their paths cross on the course. Because that’s what friends do.
