A tough day Saturday for the Todd County Central Lady Rebels at the All A girls’ state soccer tournament. The Lady Rebels were matched up against unbeaten Prestonsburg in their quarterfinal round matchup.
The Lady Blackcats gave an example of why they are unbeaten and could be one of the favorites to leave Frankfort Sunday with the All A state championship. Prestonsburg took control of their match with the Lady Rebels early on and then rolled to a 9-1 win.
Lauren Johnson had five goals and three assists for the Blackcats, while sophomore Anna Burchett chipped in with a hat trick of her own and two more assists.
Prestonsburg got out to a 7-0 lead in the first half and appeared on its way to a mercy-rule win. However, the game slowed down in the second half, and Prestonsburg scored just twice.
Todd County Central got on the board when a handball in the box gave the Lady Rebels a penalty kick. Madison Henderson converted the PK for her eighth goal of the season.
With the win, Prestonsburg, now at 9-0. advances to Sunday morning’s semifinal round, where they will take on Newport Central Catholic, who advanced with a 10-0 win over Middlesboro. It’s the third straight first-round win for the Blackcats, but they lost their previous two semifinal appearances.
Todd County Central drops to 3-4 on the season. The Lady Rebels, who were making their first All A Classic State Tournament appearance, are scheduled to get back to action Tuesday when they go on the road to take on Muhlenberg County.
