Could Akeem Hayes become big play receiver UK needs

Kentucky’s game plan against Auburn was for quarterback Terry Wilson to get the ball out of his hands as quickly as possible to receivers.

“See what they (Auburn defenders) are going to do and react to that,” Wilson said after the 29-13 loss where he completed 24 of 37 passes for 239 yards and one score.

He had seven receivers catch passes, including last year’s top receiver, Josh Ali. He had nine catches for 98 yards, the most receiving yards by a Kentucky player in a road game against a top 10 team since 2010 when Chris Matthews had 114 yards against Florida.

Running back A.J. Rose had four catches for 37 yards and DeMarcus Harris four for 25. Akeem Hayes had two catches for 24 yards, but one was an 8-yard TD catch.

“We know those guys can make big plays. The receivers work really hard and I don’t feel like they get the credit they should,” Wilson said.

Hayes seems to have the speed to be a potential big play threat.

“He definitely has speed to him and is a shifty guy. He can get open if he needs to,” Wilson said. “He can run really good routes and uses his speed very well and makes it easy to get the ball to. He has tremendous speed and going to be a threat to defenses.”
