Region tournament favorites Daviess County, Hopkinsville, and Owensboro Catholic were in the final groups to come in Monday, but it was Breckinridge County that came in early with the low score to claim the Region 2 boys’ golf title Monday.
Lincoln Smith, normally the Tigers’ fourth or fifth golfer, carded a 77 to finish in second place at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club. Webster County’s Grant Puckett shot a 4-over 75 to claim the individual title.
Mercer Rogers, who alternates with Smith in the four or five scoring slot for Breckinridge County, shot an 82 to help the Tigers score a 334, three shots ahead of second-place Hopkinsville.
Playing on its home course, Hoptown, like the other teams that began its day after 12, didn’t benefit from wet greens from the morning rainfall. Sunny and windy conditions in the afternoon made the greens faster as the day progressed.
Evan Pyle led the Hoptown golfers with an 82, which included a 38 on the back nine. For the second consecutive year, Pyle missed out on qualifying for the state tournament by one shot.
In his final match for Hoptown, James Folz carded an 85 as he struggled to find a rhythm all day and will not make a return trip to the state tournament.
Will Binkley shot an 84, and Andrew Riggs shot an 86 to round out the Hoptown scoring. Calvin Demps, a senior, shot a 95 in his final high school match.
Hoptown fell three shots short in winning the school’s first region title in six years. Owensboro Catholic was third with 339 points.
