University Heights Fends Off Mayfield

Coming off a tough loss to Murray in the All A sectional, the University Heights Academy Blazers rebounded by winning for the 5th time in their last six matches. The Blazers fended off a fiesty Mayfield squad, getting past the Cardinals 7-5 Tuesday night.

UHA got things started early in the match when William Bryan drew the goalie out of position and found the net to put the Blazers up 1-0 just over nine minutes into the match.

It look Mayfield less than a minute to even things up. Maynor Guerra Mejia took a pass right in front of the goal and scored to make it 1-1 at the 10:00 mark.

At the 13:30 mark, it was William Bryan finding the net again. This time off a pass from Elvin Wagner to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead. That lead grew to 3-1 at the 28:30 mark when Connor Dill intercepted a pass, drove down the right side of the field, and then drilled a shot to the lower left corner of the net.

Mayfield cut the lead right before the half when Mejia scored his second goal of the night to make it 3-2 at the break.

The Blazers opened the second half with a renewed defensive effort, which in turn led to offensive opportunities at the other end. William Bryan scored off a run just a minute into the second half to push the UHA lead back out to 4-2. Bryan found the net again at the 50:00 mark from 30 yards out to make it 5-2.

UHA looked to have the match safely put away when Ethan Hale scored to make it 6-2 at the 66:45 mark.

Mayfield was not going to go away that quietly though. Mejia and Deigo Fabian scored back-to-back goals in a three minute span to cut the lead to 6-4 with just over two minutes left.

The Blazers were able to seal the win when Elvin Wagner scored off a corner kick off the foot of Noah Shouse moments later.

Mayfield would add one more goal in the waning seconds to get to the final 7-5 score.

The Blazers improve to 6-1 on the season, and now get ready for a Thursday night home matchup against Owensboro Catholic.
