Monday I asked Kentucky coach Mark Stoops if he had heard from the SEC office about why Chris Rodriguez was called down short of the end zone just before halftime at Auburn. The UK coach said he had not but even when he did hear he would not be allowed to say. Stoops now has heard from the league office but apparently cannot afford to say what he wants about the explanation of the game’s key play.
Remember after the game Stoops initially said he “was clearly in” the end zone and he didn’t back of that Monday by saying he was a “yard deep” in the end zone.
“I did (hear from the SEC),” Stoops said during the weekly SEC coaches teleconference. “Got an explanation from the league, and I’m really not permitted to reveal what that discussion went like.
“I don’t really want to part with the cash if I really vented and told you what I was thinking about, so I can’t really talk about it.”
Stoops obviously knows he would have been fined a substantial amount for criticizing officials who must have ruled forward progress was stopped even though no whistle was heard on the play and forward progress was not stopped.
Kind of wish Kentucky fans could have done a GoFundMe page for Stoops’ fine just to hear the UK coach go off on the SEC for clearly blowing the call.
