Paul Finebaum has overall been a supporter and believer in Kentucky football. But not after UK’s disappointing 0-2 start. The ESPN/SEC Network analyst and radio show host unloaded on the Wildcats during a radio appearance on WJOX in Birmingham.
“For every Kentucky fan who called up to whatever show in Lexington or our show or anybody’s show and said, ‘How come nobody respects Kentucky? How come they’re not ranked high?’ Well, that’s why,” Finebaum said.
“That was just a brutal loss (in overtime to Ole Miss). There’s no sugar-coating it. This is not a game on the schedule that you’re looking at and going, ‘Oh that’s a close call.’ You’re looking at that as an automatic win.”
Brutal is a fair word for the loss. Same with the loss to Auburn.
Now UK is 0-2 and still facing games against Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee where it definitely will be a decided underdog. Lose Saturday to go to 0-3 and this season really will be a disaster.
“Within the SEC from two weeks ago today until now and people thinking Kentucky could get Auburn versus now, their season is on the brink right now. It’s hard to get these two (losses) back,” Finebaum said.
Now here’s the killer for UK football, and something that has to really irritate coach Mark Stoops and his staff.
“After Saturday, there’s no more cases to be made for Kentucky. It’s time to start thinking about John Calipari’s basketball team,” Finebaum said.
And I’ve heard plenty of Kentucky football fans saying exactly the same thing
