Hunter Reynolds had bogeyed three of four holes with four holes left in the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC/KHSAA State Golf Tournament Monday. The Trigg County junior dug deep and made par on three of his final four holes to shoot an 8-over 80 and make the second day cut for the second time in three years.

With darkness falling, Reynolds knew his score would be close to the cut line.  His tee shot on his final hole, the par-4 ninth, went behind a group of trees.  Instead of chipping into the fairway on No. 9, he opted to go left and hit the fairway on the adjacent No. 1 hole.  His third shot found the green about 30 feet from the cup. In the gloaming, Reynolds sank the putt and made par, actually making the cut by two shots.

Reynolds began his round on the back nine and made par on five of his first six holes.  He also birdied the par-4 17th hole with another long putt.

Reynolds finds himself tied for 49th after day one of the state tourney at the Bowling Green Country Club.  He finished tied for 68th in his first trip to the state tourney two years ago.

Marshall County’s Jay Nimmo is one of three golfers tied for the lead at 4-under par as he looks to repeat as state champion.
