Henderson Deals Caldwell First Loss in Region Play

The Caldwell County volleyball team has been ranked No. 1 in the 2nd Region all season.

But Henderson County has won the last five 2nd Region championships.

The Lady Colonels showed they won’t give up the crown easily on Tuesday, defeating the Lady Tigers 3-0 at the CAB gym in Princeton.

Henderson (7-7) got off to a hot start in the first set, leading 11-3, and held off a late Caldwell charge for a 25-23 triumph.

The Lady Colonels led 9-2 and 10-3 in the second set while rolling up a 25-16 win to go up two sets to none.

Henderson led for much of the third set but could never pull away. Instead, the Lady Tigers (9-4) battled back to tie things at 21-21. Down 23-21, Caldwell came back to lead at 26-25. But the Lady Tigers could not extend the match. Instead,

Henderson won the final three points of the night to finish off the victory 28-26.

It was Caldwell’s first loss to a 2nd Region team this season.

Olivia Mitchell had 10 kills, a block and nine digs for the Lady Tigers while Abby Griggs had eight kills.

Kendyll Prowell tallied 21 set assists, four kills and seven digs. Mary Tays had two kills and five digs while Riley Thomas recorded a team-high 10 digs.

Adi Sullenger had six digs and two aces. Savannah Scott added a kill and a dig for Caldwell.

The Lady Tigers will play at home again on Thursday when they host Madisonville-North Hopkins for 7th District action. Only a varsity match will be played Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
