All four Hopkinsville wins have come by shutout in 2020, as the Hoptown High girls’ soccer team wrapped up its shortened regular season with a 4-0 blanking of Apollo. Junior goalkeeper Vy Nguyen recorded her fourth shutout in the goal, helping the Tigers head into the postseason with a record of 4-2. Thursday’s matchup was just the second HHS game since Sept. 24, following a two-week COVID quarantine for the squad.
Nguyen stopped all five of the AHS shots she saw. Taylor Joachim, who relieved Nguyen late in the contest, also notched a pair of saves.
Abby Moss did the majority of the scoring against the visiting E-Gals (3-7), scoring once to give Hopkinsville a 1-0 advantage, then exploded for two more in the second half. It was the forward’s third hat trick of her junior campaign, giving Moss a team-high 12 goals this season.
The three goals by Moss came on just five shots.
Makayla Marshall, who is second on the team in scoring, used her left foot to stick in the game’s final goal with two minutes remaining at Stadium of Champions. Moss, who also had an assist in the victory, has combined with Marshall to contribute 16 of Hoptown’s 20 goals this season.
Grasen Givens took over the team lead in season assists (4) with two Thursday. Emily Acosta also assisted on a score in the balanced attack, which included 12 shots on goal by the Lady Tigers.
Defensively, HHS (4-2) got big performances from Peyton Lewis (25), Taryn Underwood (22), Morgan Woosley (20), Laney Wilson (15) and Kendall Mayes (15), as the Tiger pentagon combined for 97 steals in the dominant win.
For Hoptown head coach Jeff Addison, who is in his 18th year as the leader of the Lady Tigers, it was career win No. 234. That’s fourth-most among active coaches and ninth-most in Kentucky high school girls’ soccer history. He’s now eight victories from passing Marshall County’s Stacey Bradley for eighth on the all-time career wins list.
The Tigers now look ahead to the postseason, beginning with the 8th District Tournament. Seeded No. 2, Hopkinsville will take on No. 3 Christian County in the lone district semifinal, with the winner taking on top-seed University Heights Academy. The dates of those games are TBD.
Due to DoEDA restrictions, Fort Campbell High School did not field a soccer team in 2020.
