One dimensional offense not what Mark Stoops says he wants

Was Kentucky too one dimensional on offense against Ole Miss in Saturday’s 42-41overtime loss? The Cats ran for 408 against Mississippi and remember that philosophy is what worked for UK last year when Lynn Bowden took over at quarterback and the Cats ran, ran and ran some more while winning eight games. But in a 10-game SEC schedule, Stoops understands that has to change.

“This is an odd time to make that argument considering the 408 yards and how good we played offensively in this last game. But if you’re asking me big picture, yes, I want to be better and I want to be more efficient throwing the football, absolutely,” Stoops said.

“I think that’s a fair question and I think we’re worked hard at it.”

I don’t doubt that for a minute. Kentucky has worked on the passing game every year. But given a choice, Stoops wants to win with a ball-control offense to help protect his defense. Nothing wrong with that and in 2018 and 2019 that produced 18 total wins.

“I think you know I’m going to be judged on wins and losses. And so, you have to give our program the best opportunity to win games and if it’s Saturday where we needed to possess the ball a little bit, and rush for 400 yards and have balance then that’s what we have to do,” Stoops said.

“But again, that’s a tough argument when you could sit there and say, execute a little better on a couple pass plays and he (Terry Wilson) throws for 200 and rushes for 150, darn near. I don’t think anyone would argue with that out of your quarterback.”

Or at least not if the team won but Kentucky is 0-2 and more than balance, Kentucky just needs a win no matter what it takes.
