The Christian County Colonels got a good look Friday night at what awaits them in the first round of the 5A playoffs in three weeks, falling behind 42-0 at the half on the way to a 49-8 loss at South Warren. The Colonels finish district play at 0-3, while the Spartans, ranked second in 5A, move to 3-0 and stay undefeated on the season.
The Spartans were on the board with less than two minutes played after Jantzen Dunn rumbled 43 yards on 4th and 3 for the opening touchdown. After the Colonels went backward and fumbled at their own 5 on their first possession, South Warren was in the endzone again on a 2-yard Kobe Martin scoring run and it was 14-0 with over eight minutes still left in the first quarter.
South Warren quarterback Caden Veltkamp hit Avrin Bell for scoring strikes of 50 and 10 yards for a 28-0 lead, the second coming on an untimed down after a pass interference penalty on the Colonels to end the first quarter.
The Spartans were back in the endzone less than two minutes into the second half when Martin scored his second rushing touchdown, this one covering 37 yards. Weonard Hopkins added a 2-yard scoring run with 7:16 left in the half and South Warren led 42-0 at the break.
The Colonels opened the second half with a steady diet of L’Ray Coleman, marching down the field and finishing with a 29-yard touchdown run. Coleman ran in the 2-point conversion as well.
With possessions limited by the running clock, those were the only points of the third quarter. Fittingly, the Spartans would put up the final points of the night, with Jimmy Sales scoring on a 2-yard run with 8:20 left to play.
South Warren had fifteen first downs to the Colonels five, while outgaining them 339-157. Ninety-three of those yards on the ground for the Colonels belonged to Coleman, while quarterback Donta Abren was 5/10 through the air with an interception. The Spartans had 249 yards on the ground, while Veltkamp was 5/8 for 90 yards passing.
Christian County will look to get back on track next week when they meet Hopkinsville at the Stadium of Champions. The Colonels had won four-straight in the series, before dropping last season’s matchup to the Tigers 41-13.
