Fort Campbell’s Lady Falcon cross country team won its first region title in four years Saturday by claiming the Class 1A Region 1 championship in Murray.

The Lady Falcons defeated second-place Crittenden County by 19 points to claim the championship.  Fort Campbell, who won the 2016 region title running in Class 2A, was dropped to 1A by the KHSAA earlier this year due to a shift in student enrollment.  Fort Campbell won three straight Class 1A state titles from 1978-80.  Their last state title came in Class 2A in 1990.

The win is especially sweet for the program, which was one of only three fall sports at Fort Campbell to compete due to DoDEA concerns over COVID-19.

Emma Cogbill, running in her first region meet, finished in fifth place to pace the Lady Falcon runners. The sophomore is one of four runners who joined the program once the girls’ soccer season was shut down over the summer due to the coronavirus.  Cogbill covered the 3.1-mile course at Calloway County High School in a time of 23:29.

Alex Stearns followed her across the finish line in sixth place in a time of 24:21.  Sophie Lacy came in eighth place in 24:53.

Sunny Joo finished 13th followed by Abigail Eastes in 15th place, Caroline Hazard in 18th place, and Ella Plumb in 25th place.

St. Mary seventh-grader Gabby Ault won the race in a time of 21:22.

Fort Campbell will run at the Class 1A State Cross Country Meet Saturday in Paris.
