It wasn’t easy, but Trigg County’s girls’ cross country team ground out a third-place finish at the region meet and qualified for state.
Trigg faced several bouts of adversity on the day but finished with 77 points to better fourth place Paducah Tilghman by 16 points at Saturday’s Class 2A Region I Meet at Calloway County High School.
Reese Bush and DeDe Barbee led Trigg’s effort with a ninth and tenth place finish respectively. Bush covered the 3.1-mile course in 24:00 with Barbee 11 seconds behind.
Riley Brame finished 14th in 25:16, and Alexandria Smith was 19th in 26:38. Alesha Nyakeraka was 25th, and Sarah Sink, who plays goalie on Trigg’s district champion soccer team, finished 28th in her first cross country meet.
Calloway County’s Ainsley Smith won the race in 20:35, leading three other Calloway runners across the finish line in the first four spots to help the Lady Lakers win the region title with 26 points. Webster County was second with 49 points.
The Class 2A State Meet will be held Friday at the Bourbon County Park in Paris.
