Tomas Duncan won his fourth straight region cross country title and walked away from the finish line breathing easier than most people taking a stroll to their refrigerator.
The University Heights Academy senior led wire to wire, finishing over a minute ahead of his brother Tobias, who came in second. Tomas covered the 3.1-mile course at Calloway County High School in 16:44.
For Duncan, the win capped a solid run as he prepares to challenge for the state 1A title next Saturday in Bourbon County.
Duncan also becomes the second cross country runner at University Heights Academy to win four straight region titles, joining Muki Kunnmann who won four girls’ titles from 2015-18.
Tobias Duncan finished as runner-up for the second straight season, and the eighth-grader will enter 2021 as a favorite to begin a four-year championship streak like his older brother.
Chase Hendricks was the third Blazer across the line in 13th place with a time of 19:39. Nic Luckey finished in 23rd place in 20:32. Ray Farmer rounded out the UHA effort with a 28th place finish in 21:18.
As a team, University Heights finished in second place. Dawson Springs placed five runners in the top-10 and repeated as team champions with 34 points. UHA had 62 points to finish 28 points ahead of third-place Fort Campbell.
The Blazers will advance to next Saturday Class 1A State Meet to be run in Bourbon County.
