The final race of Chase Atkins’ cross country career did not go as planned, but the Hopkinsville senior still managed a top-10 finish at the Class 3 State Meet Saturday.
The Hopkinsville senior finished seventh at the Bourbon County course. He completed the race in a time of 16:10. The race was split into three waves with each wave starting five minutes apart and based on team finish at region. The Hoptown runners ran in the third wave, meaning Atkins didn’t get to run against the state’s best runners.
Madisonville’s Jackson Watts, who edged Atkins for the region title last week, ran in the second wave and won the state title in 15:41.
Chance Jones finished 142nd in 18:33, while Quinn Miller was 148th in 18:37. Ross Binkley finished 235th with a time of 19:50. Jonathan Bridges was 280th.
Hopkinsville, who qualified for the Class 3A state meet for the first time after years competing in Class 2A, finished 30th with 702 points.
