Over $10,000 was raised over the weekend for the Cullan Brown Memorial West Kentucky Junior Golf Development Fund that was created to honor the memory of the former Lyon County High School state golf champion.
Chris Redle, the executive director of the Bluegrass Golf Tour, organized the two-day tournament that brought in over 100 of the best high school and college golfers in the state to Paducah’s Paxton Park.
Brown was a high school state champion from Lyon County and All-SEC freshman at the University of Kentucky who died from a rare form of bone cancer in August. Not long after, Cullan’s family created the junior golf development fund as a way grow the game of golf at the junior level in western Kentucky.
Redle, who watched Cullan compete and thrive at the junior golf level before his high school and college success, wanted to continue Cullan’s memory with the fundraiser that involved golfers who knew Cullan, his sister Cathryn who also plays for Lyon County, and the family.
The tournament raised over $9,000 for the weekend. Minutes after prizes were awarded and a ceremonial check was presented to the Brown family, Track Tech of Calvert City announced they would make a donation to make the total an even $10,000.
Redle is hoping to move the event to the summer in 2021 in hopes of having up to 150 golfers compete and help keep the memorial foundation thriving.
