CBS Sports has named Kentucky freshman guard BJ Boston as a third team preseason all-American selection. Andy Katz of NCAA March Madness has Boston ranked sixth on his preseason list of national player of the year candidates behind Luke Garza of Iowa, Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois, Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State, Jared Butler of Baylor and Remy Martin of Arizona State.

Boston was the top rated shooting guard in the 2020 recruiting class and a top five player overall after averaging 19.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for Sierra Canyon (California) after transferring from Norcross (Ga.) High School after his junior season.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has praised Boston since signing day and he was such a recruiting priority that he was UK’s first commitment in the 2020 class.

Kentucky assistant Joel Justus says Boston is always motivated and in the gym trying to get better.

New Kentucky assistant coach Jai Lucas calls him a “natural basketball player” because of his skills and versatility.

“He just plays the game and he’s got great size. He can really shoot. He’s really good,” Lucas said.

The new UK assistant coach says Boston is good coming off screens and moving with the ball.

“He can play with the ball. He has good vision,” Lucas said. “For him to be so slight of build, he never looks like he’s getting like physically manhandled if that’s the best word. He plays with a kind of a slim strength because he has a quick twice to him. You can never really touch him because he’s already past you.

“He’s got everything there. It is just continuing to create habits within his game that help him carry over all the way through the season.”
