Puff the Dragon Comeback Ends at the Hands of Trigg County

Kendric Adams ran for a career-high 219 yards to help Trigg County overcome a Warren Central upset bid Friday in a 42-24 Wildcat win in Bowling Green.

The junior carried the football 28 times and amassed 157 yards in the second half as part of a 312-yard rushing night for the Wildcats.

Warren Central came into the game with a 51-game losing streak – the state’s longest – but took a 24-21 lead with 4:34 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Jace Carver.

Trigg County answered with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter by three different players.

Jaquellus Martin caught a 16-yard pass from Jacob Wease with 9:09 left that put the Wildcats ahead 28-24.

Trigg got the football back and scored again when Wease hit Dakota Lockard with a 12-yard pass with 6:51 left.

Adams put the icing on the cake with a 34-yard scoring run with 1:53 left.

It looked early as if Trigg County was going to run away with a win.  Martin scored on runs of 5 and 34 yards in the first five minutes as the Wildcats built a 14-0 lead.  Martin finished with 111 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Warren Central found its footing late in the first quarter as Carver and TySeam Day started churning out yardage for the Dragons.  On the first play of the second quarter, Dy caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Carver to get the Dragons on the board.

Day scored on a 13-yard run with 1:51 left in the half to give Warren Central its first lead of the game.

Trigg reversed the momentum when Wease hit Lockard down the seam for a 48-yard touchdown with 28 seconds left in the half for a 21-16 Trigg lead at intermission.

Wease finished 8-of-17 passing for 103 yards in the game.  Four different receivers caught two passes for the Wildcats.  Trigg County had 415 yards and moved the chains to the tune of 22 first downs.

Warren Central ran 78 plays to Trigg County’s 64.  The Dragons had 331 yards of total offense.  Carver ran for 125 yards on 15 carries while Day added 74 yards. Carver was 9-of-43 passing for 105 yards.  He was picked off twice.

It was the first-ever meeting on the gridiron between the schools.  Trigg is now 9-4 against Warren County schools, with six of the wins coming against Warren County High from 1961-66.  Their other two wins are over Warren East.

Warren Central’s season ends with a record of 0-7.  They missed the Class 4A playoffs.

Trigg County finishes the regular season with a 3-6 record. They join Belfry and Russell as the only Class 3A teams to play a full-nine game regular season.

The Wildcats will play at Paducah Tilghman in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs next week in Paducah. The Blue Tornado beat Trigg 63-26 on Sept. 25 but have not played since Oct. 16 due to COVID-19 protocols.
