Living in Tennessee has never changed Steve Cate’s love for University of Kentucky athletics. I met Steve a few years ago when I stayed at the Margaritaville Resort in Pigeon Forge and now he works for Margaritaville in Gatlinburg. He’s not the only reason I like Margaritaville Resort, but he’s a big reason.
The last few weeks he’s been having a lot of fun with the UT fans, including management, that he works with daily after Kentucky finally beat Tennessee in Knoxville this year.
Cate went to the game with a friend, who is a Tennessee fan. Cate keeps a UK football schedule poster on the wall at Margaritaville. Ask anyone here and they’ll tell you how much he loves the Cats.
When I told him I would be doing WLAP Sunday Morning Sports on WLAP (630 AM, wlap.com) here he arranged for me to use the conference room on the top floor. I will have total privacy and a great view while spending three hours talking UK football and basketball.
Cate is really glad to have chef and beverage manager Colin McQuarrie here now also. McQuarrie is a Kentucky fan as well and, like Cate, gets a daily dose of UK sports news from Kentucky Sports Radio. He’s had almost as much fun with Cate over UK’s win over the Vols.
Margaritaville Gatlinburg has a great location and amenities. My grandsons are not with me this time but this is their favorite place to stay in the Smoky Mountains — and I can’t disagree.
But what really makes it special for me is always getting to see Cate and talk UK sports, especially when he’s smiling about that Kentucky win over Tennessee.
