Trigg County was one of 16 football teams in Kentucky that was able to avoid a COVID-19 cancellation and play a full nine-game regular season.
According to the KHSAA, 232 football games were canceled during the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. The lost games were the result of positive coronavirus tests, contact tracing, or a team/player quarantine. 66 of the cancellations were last Friday.
There were four cancellations in the first week of the season Sept. 11 and the number increased each week throughout the season.
Trigg County was the only Class 3A football team to play a full nine-game schedule in 2020 without any COVID cancellations. The Wildcats will enter the postseason with a 3-6 record.
The only other team in western Kentucky to play nine games was Marshall County.
The KHSAA has said teams eliminated from the playoffs can schedule a game any time before the state finals if they choose.
According to the KHSAA, 23.9-percent of the scheduled football games in Kentucky were either canceled or postponed to another date due to COVID-19. Compared to other fall sports, volleyball was next with 8.5-percent of its matches canceled or postponed, followed by girls’ soccer [5.9%], boys’ soccer [5.6%], and field hockey [0.7%].
