The Christian County Colonels face a big challenge Friday night as they get the 2020 Class 5A football playoffs underway. The Colonels, who are the #4 seed in their district, travel to Bowling Green to take on the South Warren Spartans.
Both teams saw their seasons shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as each only played five games over the course of the season.
The Spartans took the regular season matchup between the two teams, handing the Colonels a 49-8 setback on October 23. South Warren jumped out to a 42-0 halftime lead and then cruised on out to the final 41 point margin.
The Colonels had trouble getting their offense started against South Warren in that matchup, generating 54 yards through the air and 119 yards on the ground. L’Ray Coleman led the Christian County attack, picking up 92 yards on 13 carries, scoring a touchdown and a two point conversion.
Christian County will need to find a way to slow down the Spartan running attack, which plowed its way to 230 yards on the ground in the first meeting between the two teams. Most of the damage was done by Kobe Martin, who picked up 83 yards on just 8 carries with two touchdowns.
South Warren (5-0) comes in off a long break due to the pandemic. The Spartans have not played since their game with Christian County. They have outscored their opponents 172-28. The only team so far to test South Warren was crosstown rival Bowling Green, who lost to the Spartans 10-7 back on October 2.
Christian County (1-4) opened its season with a win over Madisonville on opening night, September 11. The Colonels were then shut down until October 9.
The game is set for a 7:00pm kickoff Friday. The winner of the game will advance on to take on the winner between Greenwood and Bowling Green.
