Trigg County had several entries into its football record book for the 2020 season that ended with a 3-7 record in Mark Peach’s first campaign as Wildcat head coach.
Quarterback Jacob Wease threw for 1,587 yards – the most ever for a Trigg County sophomore. His total is the eighth-highest in a single season for a TCHS quarterback.
Wease completed 100 passes on 235 attempts during the season. Had he not been injured in the final game against Paducah Tilghman, he likely would have broken Dan Moser’s single-season record of 243 attempts set in 1999.
Wease’s 19 touchdown throws are tied for fifth-most in a season. Moser threw 36 touchdowns in 2000.
Against Marshall County on Oct. 9, Wease was 19-of-41 passing. The 19 completions is tied for fifth-most in a game, while the 41 attempts are third-most behind a pair of Moser games.
Senior Jaquellus Martin led the receiving corps with 31 catches for 711 yards. His 11 touchdowns are third-most in a season behind Devron Wadlington [2000] and Steve Oliver [1970].
He finished his career with 13 touchdowns which are tied for fifth-most in TCHS history.
Martin set the single-game receiving record with 242 yards against Paducah Tilghman on Nov. 20. His three touchdowns that night are tied for second-most in TCHS history.
Junior Keller Nichols, who also plays for the Wildcat soccer team, knocked home 35-of-38 extra points. Kyle Waldrup owns the single-season record with 52 PATs. Brent Wietting had 45 PATs in 2005.
From a team perspective, there was some good and bad during the season on the stat sheet.
- Trigg’s 56-0 season-opening win over Ballard Memorial on Sept. 11 tied for the seventh-highest margin of victory in a game.
- Trigg County is 24-27 in postseason games, the first time the program has been three games under .500 on the all-time playoff sheet.
- Trigg County’s 63-34 win over Webster County on Oct. 16 was the program’s 150th victory at the current Perdue Field. Trigg is 150-121 on the field since its first game in 1972.
- The 63 points scored against Webster County is tied for eighth-most. At the other end of the spectrum, the 63 points allowed to Paducah Tilghman on Sept. 25 are tied for sixth-most.
- Trigg County averaged 31 points a game on offense – 10th most in a season. Four of the five highest-scoring seasons came with Curtis Higgins as head coach. The program record is 43.0 in 2000. The Wildcats average of 36.6 in 2019 under Coby Lewis was fourth-highest.
- The Wildcats gave up 410 points on defense for an average of 41 points a game. Both were second-most in a season behind only the 1998 season.
Coach Mark Peach is looking forward to having a full offseason to work with the Wildcats and said there is plenty of work to be done — starting in the weight room.
