Hopefully Kentucky fans are going to appreciate what quarterback Terry Wilson has done for the University of Kentucky football program.
He’ll be playing his final home game Saturday night when the Wildcats host South Carolina.
I know this year has not gone the way Wilson or the Cats wanted. But think about more than games UK has not won this year or passes Wilson did not complete that maybe he should have.
Think about that historic 2018 win at Florida when even the most die-hard Kentucky fan probably doubted if UK could win. Wilson was terrific.
Don’t forget that Kentucky won 10 games that year, including the Citrus Bowl against Penn State.
He was off to a terrific start in 2019 when he injured his knee in the second game. He never wavered in support of his teammates, worked to rehab the knee and was ready to go when this season started.
Kentucky has lost six games but one of the three wins was at Tennessee, a place few UK quarterbacks have won. That gave Wilson wins at Florida and Tennessee, something no other UK quarterback except Derrick Ramsey has done. That’s elite company/status for Wilson.
I also remember the love he have for UK as soon as he committed to the Cats. He didn’t turn down any interview requests to spread his love for the Cats. He reached out to players already on the team as well as recruits he hoped would join the program.
So what does coach Mark Stoops think Wilson’s legacy should be? He does have a 15-8 record as a starting quarterback.
“I think it should be that he did everything he could for this program. He is a young man that helped us win 10 games (in 2018). There is no taking that away from him,” Stoops said.
“I am talking about him and him being our starting quarterback as a sophomore. I think he is a guy that laid it all out on the line for his team each and every week. None of us are perfect and that is a hard position to play. He came back from a very serious injury and he gave it everything he had. I greatly appreciate that.”
“There are frustrations at times at every one of our positions and at quarterback, you have a bull’s-eye on you. All eyes are on the quarterback each and every down and I think he has handled that very well and I appreciate that from him.”
I know I do and I’m guessing most UK fans do, too.
