The loss of championship events in the winter and spring of 2020 resulted in serious financial consequences for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. That was the bottom line report given by KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett Thursday morning during the early part of a special called session of the KHSAA Board of Control Thursday morning.

During his presentation on the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tackett told the Board the KHSAA had seen a reduction in revenue of as much as $1.1 million.

Most of that loss came as a result of what happened to the boys’ and girls’ Sweet 16s. The girls’ event was canceled after five games, while the boys’ tournament never got started. The loss from those two events was an estimated $840,000.

Prior to the pandemic, the KHSAA had maintained a financial reserve of approximately one million dollars.
