Many wondered what would happen in individual school districts across the state after the KHSAA on Thursday gave its approval to begin basketball and other winter sports practice on Monday, in anticipation of starting the season January 4. The first of those dominoes to fall came Friday from the state’s largest public school district.

Jefferson County Public Schools announced that winter sports teams from their schools would not be allowed to begin practice on Monday. In a released statement, officials with the school district stated their winter sports teams would not be allowed to begin practice, or play, until at least January.

In the announcement released Friday morning, it was also announced that conditioning would not be allowed to take place during the three week period that begins December 14.

School officials noted in their statement that Jefferson County’s current COVID case rate was still high at an estimated 60 cases per 100,000 population.

Officials said they would be consulting with board members and reviewing data, with an update expected sometime after January 1st as to the possible resumption of winter sports practices and competitions.
